Rotator Cuff Tear

A tear in the muscles and tendons that lift and move the arm.

What is it?

A rotator cuff tear happens when the muscles and tendons in your shoulder get worn down or torn. As the tear gets worse, your shoulder can become weaker and less useful. This is common in older people, and in athletes who do a lot of overhead arm movements.

Let’s talk about it

Your rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that help you lift and move your arm. Think of it like a strong engine for your shoulder. A tear is like a part of that engine getting broken, making it hard to use your arm’s full power.

Treatment options

To start, you should rest, use ice, and take medicine to help with swelling and pain. In many cases, exercise is the first treatment. You may also get a shot in your shoulder to help with pain. It’s also smart to change your home to make things easier to reach and to sleep in a reclining chair or with a special pillow.
